I think that over time his face has bee alterd so much he has no control over it any more because the small mucels that control face movements have been alterd and dont work any more
Kevin V.

Synthetic faces probably can't make expressions because they do alter the way the face works and that may also affect the way they express, But there is also a chance that Martin is very serious since he has probably been involved for a while and knows how to act the part.

I do think that proles do have a better life than the party members because they do not have to worry about anything they are humans as winston stated
Connor Jennings
10/19/2015 06:54:07 pm
I wonder why the inner party are given that privilege. It is explained in goldsteins book that class differences are necessary for their society to function, but servants and a better house are all you really need to see that the inner party is separate from the outer party. So why does BB allow the inner party to turn off their tele screens?
Nicholas
10/19/2015 06:55:16 pm
Maybe the brotherhood has groups of scientists working on stuff like face changing, 'The Book' says that the party has stopped researching anything not war related, so that could be a weak spot that brotherhood would exploit. If you have better technology or medical equipment than the thought police expect, maybe they wouldn't know what to look for?

What is Goldstien IS Big Brother, and he's waging war upon himself to make it possible for the society to blame someone for their troubles! It's unlikely, but I don't think anyone would really suspect it.
Connor Jennings

Here's an Idea, what if BB doesn't exist and he is also just a figure head of the party the same way that Goldstien is a figurehead for all the bad things the party wants.
Dylan B.

No one would suspect it but if goldstien/BB showed himself no one would believe him and he would die.

He does say in his book that war and the destruction of materials is what keeps the society stable, even though there is nothing meaningful to fight against. Knowing this, Goldstein my have set up this war against himself for global stability. In his book, he does not actually denounce the party, he simply explains how it works. It is almost impossible for people (Inner Party, Outer Party, or Parole) to obtain such information. Both Big Brother's and Goldstein's existences are never confirmed. Goldstein could very well be Big Brother!

I believe that this quote is saying that corrupt or totalitarian government that controls people against their or, better yet, against their knowledge is the only way Utopia can be achieved. By the time such government is achieved, those in power are too corrupt to give their power to a utopian society. At this point of Utopian potential, power hungry rulers turn the society into a Dystopia instead. This is applicable to the future society you proposed. Those in power, whether they be politicians or programmers, would chose power over a utopian society.

I think that big brother being a figure to scare the society is a possibly, so are you saying that the telescreens are just to scare people as well and no one can always see what your doing. If so I'm wondering what gets all the people all in trouble for committing crimes is it just the thought police, or some other unknown force?

I think that O'Brien is faking. The reason why is because a part of he book talks about how the inter party is still watched when their telescreen are off. And that's what O'Brien did. Either they weren't watch cause he is big brother or they were watching the whole thing happen.
Sammy
10/19/2015 11:02:11 pm
Like Marissa, I also think that he can not be trusted. He is in the inner party and can make people think differently. I think that he told Winston that the screen was off, but maybe he was really giving a signal to watch that one.
Ben Callaway
