The quote I chose is in page 29."I'll probably be a bench warmer in the C squad while Rowdy goes on to All-State glory and fame". I chose this quote to annotate because this route shows how junior has no hope or dreams. This tells us that the reservation does not give hope or dreams to anyone. You can also tell by looking at this quote that Junior does not believe in himself or does not think that he can go far.this quote also tells us that junior thinks that he's never going to go anywhere.
Connor Jennings
8/26/2015 12:03:41 pm
I disagree. On page 42 Mr. P says "You can't give up. You won't give up. You threw that book in my face because somewhere inside you refuse to give up" I think Mr. P is right and Junior himself even shows he won't give up because of his cartoons. He says cartoons "are my tiny little lifeboats."pg. 6. Junior says that he can't join the varsity team because he physically can't. Like he says he will be competing against kids with 3 years on him, he isn't hopeless, he is just realistic.

8/26/2015 12:29:14 pm
I agree with you because the kids at the reservation have always been taught that life will always be at the reservation and they are never taught to think about the possibilities of going out of the reservations. There is legit no hope coming from the teachers or the parents which in return makes the kids exactly the same. You can't expect to think about going anywhere if you are never taught to do so.

The quote that I choose was when he started talking about how most kids thinks Mr. P is cool because he comes to school in his pajamas. I would think that my teacher just doesn't want to be here and hates his job. That would be cool to have a teacher in their pajamas at school because they got up late
Connor Jennings
8/26/2015 12:19:37 pm
This makes me wonder, if Mr. P cares so much about Junior that he is willing to cry in front of him to show his compassion, why is he so lax about school. He obviously cares about Junior and he is probably on the lookout for kids with hope since he knew that Junior had hope even though it was the first day of class. He definitely couldn't of gotten Juniors full backstory from getting a textbook thrown at his face, that could of just been a rowdy kid, like Rowdy. (ba dum tssss)
Connor Jennings
8/26/2015 12:28:47 pm

"During one week when I was little, dad stopped 3 times for a DWI, Driving While Indian." I chose this quote because it made we think differently about the book. Some questions I have about this quote are..... Are you not allowed to drive if your Indian? ... If you are not allowed to drive there how to they get around? While reading this quote I felt bad for the Indians on the ressorvation because I think that they should have the same rights as the rest of the people.
Ben Callaway
8/26/2015 12:20:59 pm
I really like how you are speaking for their rights. I don't find it fair how they don't get to do anything in certain towns. I can actually connect to another events that happened in history. Cops shot and killed an innocent man of another country working to support himself for pulling something out of his pocket when they approached him. Would they do that to a white person?
Connor Jennings
8/26/2015 12:23:15 pm
Junior wasn't being literal. He was just pointing out that there is racism where he is about to go to school. The cops stopped him because he was indian, but I doubt there is any actual law about it.
Rachel Mendelsohn
8/26/2015 01:33:03 pm
I believe he is referring to a situation that, unfortunately, still happens today, to any person of color. Say two people were showing clear signs of driving under the influence, one of them white, one Hispanic, and the cop can only go after one. Good officers, trying to do their job to the best of their abilities, will want to stop as much illegal activity (in as little time) as possible. In this situation, they use racial profiling to identify which driver has the highest potential for not only DUI, but other violations. Therefore, they will pull over the Hispanic driver, also seeing if they are in this country legally. The white person doesn't get a ticket, the Hispanic person does. If this can happen with the best of cops, imagine what could happen when the stereotypes and racism the author illustrates are added into the mix. You are right, Brittney, it is about equal rights, but I believe this line is trying to remind the reader that of a subtler version, one that laws can't fix.
Marissa Limon
8/26/2015 01:08:54 pm

There are situations in our lives where everyone around us has given up hope, or even something else. We are told to keep a positive attitude, and that is fairly easy when everyone around you does, but what about when nobody does? It takes strength and courage to be the one who keeps a positive attitude and does let the surrounding negativity get to you.

I like that you were able to connect to this, and I'm sorry that it was a connection to something so tragic. However, I think another great thing about this quote is that it seems like Junior is giving insight on his thoughts about the way the world works. For example, some people may think that if you run fast enough, if you run without stopping for a long enough time, you may be able to get so far away that your troubles won't be able to follow you. In Junior's mind, though, this isn't possible. It's not even an option. I think this quote shows us how realistically Junior chooses to think.

In the book, " the absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian" Junior faces some tough challenges, " we are just poor. That's all we are." ( 13) Does how much money you make influence who you are? Junior loves to draw cartons but is not confident in his work and has no one there to support him. He is doing what he loves the difference is just that he is not succeeding who you are cannot be changed, from the moment you are born you are you. things grow, your brain gets smarter and your skin begins to wrinkle but the things that will never change is your heart soul and smile. After smashing Mr. P’s face accidentally with his book, Mr. P actually came to Arnold’s house and apologized to him. Throughout their conversation, Mr. P said something that caught my eye. “No matter how much I don’t want to. I have to forgive you. It’s the only thing that keeps me from smacking you with an ugly stick. When I first started teaching here, that’s what we did to the rowdy ones, you know? We beat them. That’s how we were taught to teach you. We were supposed to kill the Indian to save the child,” (p 35). This quote stood out to me because of the tension and the connection. You can see that Mr. P would hate to hit Arnold with a stick, so he forces himself to forgive himself. Back then, when students we not behaving in class, their teacher would smack them with a stick. (Which I believe is totally unfair because when are students ever perfect listeners) Mr. P uses the metaphor, “we were supposed to kill the Indian to save the child,”, meaning they tried to bring the Indian-ness out of the child, and make them “give up” being an Indian. I find this very unfair, because no matter what, they’ll still be that race, and you can’t beat them up to try to take that away. 9/8/2015 12:07:25 pm
