"Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct, nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary. In no case would it have been possible, once the deed was done, to prove that any falsification had taken place." ch. 4

I forgot to put my question. My question is do the people think the years and dates of events are important? or has it just become something no one really notices?
Nicholas
10/1/2015 06:14:03 pm
It seems to me like it might be both. I can't imagine that nobody notices that there's no way to tell the year, but as you point out, nobody seems to care.

I feel this whole part of the book is a reflection of what happens in the real world and might lend the book more realism. It doesn't matter if you live in a democracy or a dystopia, bureaucracy gets into everything.

I doubt Piggy will revolt, but I do think he will eventually strike out on his own to avoid harassment. He has been very passive so far and in any case, he has asthma. If he tried to revolt against Ralph or Jack he would just get beat up. I think Piggy is to smart to do that.

Nicholas

Oceania is probably lying because that is the only way they can get there way. I suspect that the party probably came into power at some time of war, but then in order to keep power they pulled wool over everyones eyes and lied to convince them it was necessary to keep BB in control.

I think the reason that citizens have to work out isn't for health reasons, it is just to keep them busy. If everything is scheduled by the government no one can find any time to conspire against them.

Piggy is the only one in the group who truly realizes how bad their situation is. On page 39 this first becomes apparent, "Ralph was already clambering over the first smashed of the scar. A long way ahead of him was crashing and laughter. Piggy watched him in disgust. 'Like a crowd of kids-'" From the beginning, Piggy has been a pessimist, he pointed out to Ralph early on that none knew where they are, and even said the same thing when the group met around the fire, but both times Ralph shrugged him off. Piggy realizes that to properly survive for a long amount of time everyone must act mature, like adults, and he is worried and disappointed by the happy go lucky nature of everyone else in the group.

That is a awesome question Piper. Maybe Big Brother brainwashed them like he brainwashed them into thinking death was a "good" thing.

They don't need to directly change their brains to alter their memories. Memories are adapted to current information. If someone tells them Ogiviy existed, they will actually "remember" that speech.

" He crumpled up the original message and any notes that he himself have made, and dropped them into the memory hole to be devoured by the flames."
Dominic
10/1/2015 10:41:47 pm
Big brother probably started because he was very convincing and that led him to rise to power. People were forced to follow him afterwards because he had much power with the police. Since technology is somehow advancing very fast, he may not die, he might find away to keep himself alive. If he did die, people inside Oceania would end up killing each other for power.
Rachel Mendelsohn
10/1/2015 10:55:29 pm
They can falsify one existence and "vaporize" another, so I believe the people would never know if he died. For all we know, he could be dead already.
