I think Mr. P. actually said something similar when he was talking about metaphorically killing indians. The government made the reservations to sweep aside the indians and eventually convert them to being white. If Mr. P is to be believed, it didn't work; The rez wend from a twisted prison/rehabilitation/brainwash camp to just a prison. No rehabilitation, not even evil rehabilitation. I'm not sure if thats a good or bad thing.......
Jackson Welsh
8/27/2015 12:37:31 pm
I don't really think it makes sense to compare Mr. P to Junior. Junior actually said he hated Mr. P after he brought up the fact that he used to beat his Native-American students.
Audrey M.
8/27/2015 02:59:41 pm
I think that while Jr. may have hated Mr.P, he see's that if he were to stay on the rez for the rest of his life, he would end up as lonely as him. I also think that Mr. P wants Jr. to be a smarter and better person than he was.
Audrey M.

You bring up an interesting point; maybe the fact that they are living is proof that that still have the slightest bit of hope. If that is true, perhaps they have the potential for more. If Junior can show them that there is still a life worth hoping for, perhaps the smidgen of hope they each have inside of them will grow into something bigger.

I think this part in the book has less to do with having hope, and more to show how alienated junior feels. Only his grandmother, who understands the more fundamental rules of people, understands what actually happened.

At this point in the book, we are seeing a fantasized version of the Reardan kids. I am curious to see what they are really like and where there hope truly comes from. Does the affluence Junior is seeing translate to hope? Or is there something else that Junior and the reader are missing?

I'm going to use a quote from page 70 when Junior is describing Eugene.
Connor Jennings
8/27/2015 11:35:02 am
I hadn't really thought about it that way but it does make sense. I think that because a lot of adults on the rez are constantly drunk when describing someone it is important to explain their drunk personality as well as their regular one, so that you know when you want to be around someone. For instance, if someone was a "sad guy but a happy drunk" You know that hanging out with him while sober will just make you depressed, but hanging out with him while drunk isn't a bad option (if everyone else you know is drunk)
Garret Esparza
8/27/2015 12:54:30 pm

Nicholas
8/27/2015 11:39:02 am
The similar style could also be a hint that, while in the rez junior is the squishy little bully target, at reardan (where physical fights aren't really a thing) he has become the Rowdy.

Jackson Welsh

I think Junior believes that no matter how hard he tries, he will never be successful as them because of the way society treats Native-Americans.
Evan McDuffie
8/27/2015 01:47:30 pm
I think Junior believes he doesn't have as much hope because the white kids at Reardan are all middle class or higher and will probably do extremely well and go to college. Junior may have goals that he is attempting to achieve, but being a reservation Indian isn't exactly the best place to be in terms of opportunity.

8/27/2015 12:45:44 pm
I chose the quote, "I was so ashamed. I might have impressed the king, but the queen still hates me." Junior thought that by getting respect from the alpha dog he would gain respect from from everyone else. He figured out that it didn't work like that when he tried to say hi to the queen, aka Penelope. She embarrassed him in front of all of her friends and he couldn't do anything about it except to try to get her respect through out their school year together. To be honest I thought that Penelope would have respected him when she found out about Junior standing up for himself. Apparently not, he will just have to work hard enough to gain the respect he wants.
bella
8/27/2015 02:00:30 pm
I feel like Penelope might be acting a certain way in front of her friends, because authors put characters like her in books for a reason. We often later see a different side of them, and I can't wait to see who Penelope is when she's taking a break being the queen of the school.

"i was a freaky alien and there was absolutely no way to get home." (66)this quote proves how much people effect you, how much change effects you and how much in matters to fit in. junior thinks he is a alien because of his culture and race. He believes in a dream and backs out as soon as things got complicated. the author is implying that junior has a million reasons to give up but follows the one reason why he shouldn't give up. i can relate to this because I've had experiences where it was easier to give up but held on because of the few things that gave me hope.

I agree with the fact that he was a fish out of water at his new school. I also agree that him getting up everyday and going to school even with he doesn't want to is brave. 'I knew those rules. I'd memorized those rules. I'd lived my life by those rules. I got into my first fistfight when I was 3 years old, and I've been in dozens since." (pg.62) This shows that junior is trying to turn himself around. He says he has gotten into dozens of fights and that is not something that he is proud of at all. He wants to try and correct his mistakes from the past become a different person. He did not like the person he became when he was fighting others. I believe he feels guilty for everyone has has beat up of has tried to beat up.
