I think this is because Gordy is racist.
Nicholas
8/31/2015 11:43:44 am
I disagree. I don't think Gordy is Racist at all, he's just taken aback by how forward Junior is being. It makes sense that Junior doesn't know how making friends works though, he's only ever had one.
Connor Jennings
8/31/2015 11:51:10 am
I don't think that Gordy is racist, he is just taken aback by how direct Junior is being. Normally, to become friends with someone you hang around them for a bit, talk to them about common interests, etc. until they start actively initiating communication with you for no professional purpose. Telling someone "I want to be your friend" is very straight forward, and treats friendship as something that is binary, which surprises many people because it isn't the common way to become friends. In second grade I did a similar thing to Junior where I out of the blue asked someone to be friends. He had a nearly identical reaction to Gordy because of my directness.
Nicholas

I had no idea Connor was writing that comment.......
Sammy

I also don't think Gordy is racist because he still became friends with Junior and he taught him how to read.

I think there is too much knowledge in the world.
Connor Jennings
8/31/2015 12:00:30 pm
I think that there isn't to much, there can never be to much, there is just to much for one person to know. But if you study a single field you can start learning things that no one has ever learned before!
Emma Buchanan
8/31/2015 12:55:41 pm
I believe there isn't enough knowledge in the world. We barely know anything about it. We don't even know every species under the ocean, or why humans were created, or why anything was created. And even how. I believe our minds are like its own universe, it has it's beauty, and it has its flaws. Just like anything and everything.

The quote I chose was when Junior drew the cartoon for Rowdy.
Kevin V.
8/31/2015 11:42:34 am
Although we see Rowdy as like a real tough dude, I do have a feeling that their friendship isn't really finished. Sure he is really mean to Arnold now, but that doesn't mean he stopped being friends with him, their probably just taking a time out.
Robson
8/31/2015 01:45:32 pm

I chose the quote, "Well, come on, it's kinda hard to take you seriously when you're talking about the Great Wall of China and Egypt and stuff. Those are just big goofy dreams. They're no real." on page 111. I chose this quote because Junior is making it seem like there is no hope for Penelope's hopes and dreams. I am confused because the whole point of Junior wanting to switch schools to go to Reardan was for there to be hope. If you ask me I see it as if there being no hope anywhere unless your rich and can afford to dream.
Kevin V.
8/31/2015 11:39:39 am
Well when you think about it from a realistic point of view he is right and they are kind of goofy ideas. But I can see where your coming from because the reason he did transfer is so that hope could actually be a thing for him and by saying this he is destroying hope for Penelope.
Nicholas
8/31/2015 11:51:00 am
I don't think Junior meant her dreams were goofy because they were unachievable, He meant Goofy as in shallow. Traveling the world could be part of a dream, but by itself it's just something that People do if they have a lot of money to spare. In other words, Junior wants to know WHY Penelope wants to travel the world.

The Quote I choose is from page 115, when Penelope is playing against the Lady Gorillas:
Jackson Welsh
8/31/2015 12:37:39 pm
I didn't think about it that way. I guess since the story is written from Junior's perspective, it sounded to me like all the kids at the new school were above average.

8/31/2015 11:56:37 am
Personally, I always get a "The Great Gatsby" sort of feeling of of anything Penelope does, She has a huge ego and does tons of fancy things, but there's also a person in there, somewhere....
Evan McDuffie
8/31/2015 02:27:40 pm
I agree with you that Penelope has a big ego, but Junior doesn't see her in that way. He kind of looks at Penelope as an equal, rather than what she thinks she is.

"I am a Indian boy"I said ? "How can I get a white a girl to love me". I chose this quote because you can see how junior thinks he's indian. This also show's how if your indian your treated less.
Rachel Mendelsohn
8/31/2015 05:00:16 pm
What I find interesting about he is putting Penelope and himself in little boxes. "She is white, so she is a a privileged snob, so she is out of my league." "I am Indian, so I am hopeless, so I am unworthy of a white girl. It shows just how easy it is to stereotype people, no matter who you are. We tend to think of racism as white people looking down on other races of people, but it is something that can come from anywhere.

You're right, courage doesn't mean punching people. Maybe that's the opposite of courage. Your analysis got me thinking that the brute force Rowdy uses is actually just something to hide behind. If he uses violence, he doesn't have to address his problems. When Junior is doing something he's afraid of, he is looking it straight in the eye.
