Rachel Mendelsohn
9/8/2015 06:08:46 pm
That is an interesting point, I think it shows that stereotypes - racial or otherwise - can so easily become part of the way we view the world. It is such a human thing to look at the world around us and decide that's it, that's what it's like. On some level, we all do this. That is why it is so important for us to take a step back and realize we don't have all the facts.

I've started to notice a lot of similarities between junior and his grandmother. They both travel, are good role models, are good spirited, are very grounded, and are very likable. From what I can tell, the author put a lot of stuff from his own life into this book, so I wonder if he had a really cool grandmother too. In any case, at least now we know where Junior and Mary get their big dreams from.

I think that when Junior talks about God he means it in more of a metaphorical sense. He is mad at the recent events in his life and he channels this anger by thinking that someone is making those things happen. Religion is a great way to give an answer to things you can't explain, the ancient Greeks used to to describe lighting, the Egyptians used to to describe the sun, and Juniohuses it to explain why his grandmother and dad's best friend died.

"I wonder if I should just intentionally foul him and prevent him from dunking."
Rachel Mendelsohn
9/8/2015 05:59:13 pm
I interpreted this in a different way. I think Junior wanted revenge so much that he didn't care about letting his team down, about letting himself down, all that mattered to him in that moment was taking the joy of that dunk away from Rowdy. What I really admired about this was that he stops himself and decides to hold himself to a higher standard.
Nicholas
9/8/2015 06:24:52 pm
I agree, It kind of old folk heros, they always want to succeed, but even when given the option (they always are), they never cheat. While fouling Rowdy isn't really cheating, it still isn't winning on proper terms. Actually, I bet if you looked closely, you could find a bunch of things relating Junior to a folk hero.

When I first read this quote, I thought Grandmother Spirit was talking about Junior. The doctor only made an educated guess when he said it was about the guy who ran her over. I think that grandmother spirit knew that Junior was getting a lot of hate about what he was doing and wanted people to know that she wanted them to forgive him and maybe even follow his example.

"Instead, it was Gordy who defended me. He stood with his textbook and dropped it. Whomp!" page 175 I chose this quote because I felt the reality of their friendship. Gordy stood up for Junior and that is basically one of the best things to do to prove your friendship. Especially when he didn't have to stand up for Junior. After Gordy performed the inspirational "movement" everyone else in the class did the same exact thing. As much as it inspired them, it inspired me as well. I was impressed by how he chose to defend Junior and how he wasn't forced. To be honest I think that everyone of us deserves to have that type of friend and even become that friend!
