I felt the same why when I was reading that quote. I agree that the dad was trying to hold on to the one kid he had left.

I agree, and I think this is a common reaction to death. We realize that we can't take anything for granted, because we have no idea what tomorrow brings. When a loved one dies, we think "I never got a chance to say goodbye". We wish we could have told them how much we love them, and how much we appreciate all the things they did for us. In the past year, my family has experienced a lot of losses. We have decided that the best thing to do is tell everyone how much you love and appreciate them, because they need to know. After losing one child, Junior's dad has learned to appreciate the people around him.

People usually laugh when they are confronted by something uncomfortable or disturbing, and losing someone is easily one of the worst things to have happen to you, so it would make sense that people laugh when someone they know dies.
Evan McDuffie
9/10/2015 08:54:55 pm
I think Junior laughed when he found out about his sister's death was because it was comforting. Trying to make something funny out of a bad situation like the death of a loved one may be one way of coping with the loss.

That's super interesting, I never thought about it that way but it makes a lot of sense. In the quote Junior is describing being depressed and hopeless, but the quote could also be used to describe the res (which is a pretty depressing and hopeless place).

That's a great connection, and it made me think back to when Juniors teacher said he would die if he didn't leave the reservation. He probably didn't mean this literally, but he could be referring to the room you are describing. Hopelessness and deaths bring on the same kind of haze, and put you in that small room.

"We have defeated the enemy! We have defeated the champions!" This caught my eye because junior through out the book never believed in himself. He never thought that they would beat the champions. He probably thought that they were not even gonna win a single game. I can relate to this because I would always think that my team will never win a game but guess what we one the championship.

"You can't stop me. I've been kicking your ass for fourteen years." "Not tonight," I said. "Tonight's my night." This quote is amazing, Junior is finally believing in himself! He is acting strong, courageous, and hopeful. He is really becoming the "man" his old teacher at Wellpinit was hoping he would become. All his life Junior was expected to fail and fail and keep failing, but now he is excelling and showing people that he isn't just a scrawny guy. He achieves things he didn't think he was capable of doing. Just like back when he stole the ball from Rowdy at the game and shot the three pointer. He would have never been able to do that if he wasn't encouraged by his coach or his team mates. He is finally finding the hope he was supposed to find by leaving Wellpinit. I can imagine he is excited to find out what more he is capable of doing.
